The History
“The new village above the river where the oaks grow”
13th century
The area has a rich history from Roman times with the oldest houses in the village dating back to the 18th century. Old routeways and tracks can still be found, including along ancient glacial moraine ridges beside the village. These and the many footpaths are great places to walk, enjoy nature and birdwatch, especially near the historic River Derwent – famous for the Battle of Stamford Bridge just a few miles upstream in 1066.
